A new 10-model family of Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet networking edge switches designed to deliver enterprise level features, including scalable, wire-rate performance, at an entry level price point has been released by Enterasys Networks.
The Enterasys 800-Series comprises four 10/100 and six 10/100/1000 Mbps switches, allowing up to eight switches to be interconnected to form a single managed entity, thereby creating a virtual switch that can be managed with a single IP address to help minimise management requirements.
“A key feature of the 800-Series is its incorporation of the link layer discovery protocol (LLDP),” says Martin May, regional director, Enterasys Networks SA.
“LLDP, which defines basic discovery capabilities, is further enhanced to address voice-over-IP applications. This extension is known as LLDP for media endpoint devices or LLDP-MED. Endpoint devices can include IP phones, network switches and other devices, giving the switches enterprise-like capabilities,” he explains.
An integral power supply is the primary source of power for all 800-Series switches and complete power redundancy is provided by optional external power supplies. All switches support the IEEE 802.3at standard which allows up to 30 watts of PoE (power over Ethernet) to be provided to a single port.
Dynamic power allocation is supported which allows unused, allocated PoE power to be returned to the central pool for use on other ports. Up to 375 watts of PoE power are available on the 24 port and 48 port PoE models.
Other features include one-to-one and many-to-one port mirroring with eight priority queues per port. End-users can be authorised via IEEE 802.11X, MAC address or via Web-based authentication. Class of service, bandwidth control and access control lists (ACLs) are standard features on all switches, which also boast IPv4 static routes and IPv6 default routing.
“Enterasys 800-Series switches can be managed via a Command Line Interface – an excellent Web interface – or via NetSight, Enterasys’ own management application,” notes May.
The 800-Series carries a lifetime warranty backed by 24/7 telephonic support, firmware upgrades and rapid unit replacement response, should it become necessary.
