As it launches its new BlackBerry 10 smartphone, Research in Motion (now known as BlackBerry) will also unveil what it believes is the largest collection of apps for any new mobile device – with 70 000 apps currently in the BlackBerry World app store.
Alex Saunders, VP of business development, has spent the last year visiting developers around the world and encouraging them to develop BlackBerry 10 apps.
“The response from developers has been pretty phenomenal,” he says. “We have seen a huge groundswell of support from developers.”
An indication of the success of this strategy is the fact that RIM recently ran to “port-a-thons”. Developers presented 15 000 apps at the first and 19 000 at the second.
“Thanks to the developers for their commitment, support, dedication,” says Saunders. “We have the largest catalogue of applications for first generation of mobile device.”
CEO and president Thorsten Heins adds that the launch of BlackBerry 10 has also seen a new way that the company is working with its partners.
This includes a more strategic and open relationship with leading application providers, he says.
As a result, BlackBerry 10 launches with a massive collection of music, movies and television shows.
“There are a lot of things to choose from,” he says.
Other major apps include Skype, Kindle, WhatsApp, SAP and even Angry Birds.
More than 1 000 of the world’s top applications are committed to BlackBerry 10, including major social networking platforms, personal productivity, games and information content.
