HP Discover, Las Vegas – The concept of a new “IT style” emerging in the industry, as opposed to an evolutionary step or a paradigm shift, was first mooted by HP at its PartnerWorld conference earlier this year.
And during a press conference at HP Discover, Todd Bradley, executive vice-president of PPS at HP, reinforced just why “style” is the most appropriate term for the change IT is currently undergoing.
“What do we make?” Bradley asked assembled journalists from around the world. “What does PPS make? Is it notebooks? Tablets? Desktops? Printers? Clearly that’s what we build – and we build thousands of them every day.
“But that’s not really what we make,” he emphasised. “What we really make, what we enable you to create, are connections. We give you the ability to connect.
“But while connectivity is important, what’s more important is this experience – how people help their business, their family. How they create, consume and share. The devices that we build, what they really are, are the on-ramps and off-ramps to places of creativity; to places of productivity; and, essentially, to places of phenomenal potential.
“The boxes that we put out there are what help people break out of their boxes,” Bradley explains.
“What we are talking about is a new style of IT,” he continues. “It’s all about the connected experience through technology, through services and networks; to be able to print, scan and retrieve; it’s about data security; and it’s about efficient access to anything, anywhere, anytime, ushering in new form factors that will shatter existing categories.
“With the consumerisation of IT, we are entering a new era defined by anytime, anywhere connectivity that is safe and secure,” Bradley says.
“And today [during Discover] we will show you how we help customers build that better enterprise. We’ll show it in three main areas: First, we are investing heavily in mobility to create devices that will drive these solutions. That is so important and we are redefining mobility in both the consumer and commercial markets.
“Our goal is simple: To help our customers move between the physical and digital worlds, allow them to access vital information for their business or for how they manage their lives. And they can access this when, where and how they want it.
“Secondly, around the cloud and displays,” he adds. “Today we’re delivering some phenomenal cloud-based solutions that will usher in a new era in simplicity.
“And thirdly, productivity,” says Bradley. “How do we enable the currently inefficient to become productive and take advantage of the new opportunities that come with that enablement.
“So what’s the news of the day,” Bradley asks. “It’s mobility leadership, opportunity through the cloud, productivity in the enterprise, and how we’re building to enable this new style of IT.
“How we make it matter,” Bradley says.
