Mark Davison at Oracle OpenWorld, San Francisco – One of the sharpest brains in IT, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison has always proved to be a reliable source for sound bites or quips – some of which have his marketing and PR staff tearing at their hair. His Sunday keynote was no exception.
Some of his more pointed one-liners included:
“I hope some of you got to see some sailing today – I certainly did.” On Oracle Team USA taking the two Sunday races in The America’s Cup currently taking place in San Francisco Bay.
“Does this stuff work? You gave me these slides and I’ve read them [out].” On calling for the in-memory live demo. Ellison had no reason for doubt. While he had been lauding processing speeds of up to 100 times faster, the demo actually processed 1 370 times faster.
“I’m going to explain every one of these lines. We’ll be finished here on Thursday at around 4:00pm.” On a Spirograph-type slide in his presentation.
“I see my IBM partner’s not applauding down here.” On announcing the Big Memory Machine with better features and lower cost than its IBM equivalent.
“It’s available … let me think, let me think … today.” On the availability of the Big Memory Machine.
“We’ll be taking orders for this just outside.” Prior to the on-stage demo of the Big Memory Machine.
“My third announcement, the last announcement, and I’m sure it’s great for you to hear that.” Prior to the announcement of the Oracle Backup Logging Recovery Appliance.
“You’re probably asking who named this? I did. That’s why they pay me the big bucks.” On the same device.
