The East Rand South of Johannesburg saw a 4% decrease in its peak time congestion levels from 22% to 18% according to the TomTom Traffic Congestion Reports for the second quarters of 2012 and 2013.
This drop in percentile coincidently fell around the same time that the road works on the N12 were completed.
“In South Africa we have seen that neither toll gate nor highway congestion but rather road closures and accidents, cause the most severe congestion,” says Daan Henderickx, country manager for TomTom Southern Africa.
In TomTom’s global traffic vontrol room, based in Amsterdam, anonymous probe data is collected and monitored to depict major traffic trends. TomTom observed a global trend in congestion, across over 40 countries around the world which they monitor, that the most severe congestion experienced on roadways is usually caused by accidents and road closures.
“As these traffic events are unpredictable we urge all GO Series users to always use the LIVE Traffic Service when driving to avoid unexpected congestion caused by road closures and road accidents – even for routes that they travel daily,” says Henderickx.
