The latest version of Windows Operating Systems (OS), Windows 8.1, is now available from distributor Drive Control Corporation (DCC). Combining the innovative touch-optimised features of Windows 8 with a familiar, desktop-friendly interface, along with several enhancements and support for advanced mobility, Windows 8.1 is the ultimate OS for a connected and mobile generation.

“Windows 8 was a revolution in the OS environment, delivering a user experience designed for multi-touch tablets and mobile devices. Windows 8.1 builds on this innovation with several features that make the OS even easier to navigate for desktop users. One of the most notable features is the return of the Start button, which enhances the experience for those without a touch screen.

“Windows 8.1 also features faster start-up times and the ability to bypass the Live Tile user interface and boot directly to the traditional Windows desktop. This caters to traditionalists who wish to have a more familiar Windows experience along with the enhancements of the Windows 8 system,” says Ruben Naicker, Microsoft product specialist at DCC.

Other enhancements in Windows 8.1 include the ability to snap more applications side-by-side for better multitasking, as well as improved cross-system search as well as search that ties into cloud-based SkyDrive storage.

Customisation ability is enhanced through a number of added functions. Users can now set default applications for their Web browser, email, music, videos, calendars and more. Applications can be arranged into groups, wallpapers and backgrounds can be customised, and icons on the home screen can be re-sized to large, wide, medium and small to offer a personalised desktop.

Automated application updates have also been included in the new release for enhanced ease of use.

In addition to these usability enhancements, Windows 8.1 also offers a number of features designed with the serious business user in mind. BitLocker and BitLocker To Go help to keep information secure, a must in a mobile-driven world.

Windows 8.1 also enables you to host a Remote Desktop Connection on your own PC so you can connect to it when you’re using a different PC. Furthermore, the new version also allows you to join a domain so that you can connect to corporate or school networks with ease.

“Windows 8.1 has been designed to empower BYOD with enhanced management features, and also to deliver the security, performance, updates and compatibility to help organisations manage today’s devices and infrastructure, with device encryption, multi-factor authentication for BYOD, remote business data removal and more.

“This new version of Microsoft’s OS offers a better user experience and enhances mobility and security, making it ideal for corporate users as well as consumers who have embraced touch screen technology,” Naicker concludes.

Windows 8.1 is available from resellers and leading retailers immediately for a recommended retail price of R1 966.50 inclusive of VAT.
