Gone are the days when phones were technologically inferior to televisions. Nowadays, your smartphone might just have better display technology than your television. Being at the forefront of mobile and display technologies, LG has introduced the next standard for smartphone display: the Quad HD.
When LG began developing the G3, full HD display was the best resolution available for smartphones. Since LG has always been an innovation company that maintains a high reputation and expertise in the display arena, the developers decided that the G3 would need to incorporate a new display technology. Quad HD was chosen because of its capability to render true-to-life image quality – a South African-first for the smartphone market.
For six months before the launch of the G3, LG worked around the clock to iron out any image quality wrinkles in the display. Through countless trials and improvements, it succeeded in developing the best display. As a result, the Quad HD display panel was certified by NEMKO, the Norway-based international testing and certification organisation for electrical products.
The G3’s 5.5-inch Quad HD display (538ppi) carries four times the resolution of standard HD and almost twice the resolution of a full HD display. This means that Quad HD displays give sharper, crisper, and clearer images with more realistic colour reproduction. With a high-resolution Quad HD display, users can really see the finest of details in images.
While Quad HD is impressive and innovative, there is a concern that it might be impractical due to a lack of content that can utilise its full potential. However, this isn’t – pardon the pun – the full picture. Most smartphones carry 13-megapixel cameras, so any photos taken by these phones carry higher resolutions than full HD. This means that up until now, we’ve all been looking at high quality images on low resolution displays.
With the G3’s Quad HD resolution, you’ll now be able to see better quality images.
With higher resolution and more pixels, it’s understandable that a battery will consume more power. Full HD displays, for example, are estimated to consumer 10-20% more power than HD smartphone displays.
However, the G3 is designed to optimise its battery consumption based on various usage cases. This is referred to as 3A (Adaptive) Optimisation, in which the G3’s battery consumption can be enhanced, depending how you’re using your phone’s display. The end result is that the G3’s display uses less energy than a standard Quad HD display.
Once more, LG has ushered in a new generation of display technology for smartphones. With the G3, you can now have the full power of your HD TV at home in your back pocket.
