The availability of BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) on Android devices has been put on hold.

Last week it announced that BBM would be available from the Google Play store but, due to technical integration concerns, BBM has withheld the application’s release to all Android users across Africa. Availability of the app has been paused until the technical aspects have been fully addressed.

Samsung, which last week welcomed the news that BBM would be available on its Galaxy devices, will advise customers on when these have been resolved.

George Ferreira, vice-president and chief operating officer of Samsung Electronics Africa, comments: “We are in constant communication with BBM, who continues to undergo extensive testing to ensure that the quality of the user experience remains top priority before the application is added to the Google Play store, for our customers in South Africa and across Africa. We have been assured that their team is working around the clock to make BBM available to Samsung Android customers.”

BBM for Android will be compatible with Galaxy smartphone devices that run Android 4.0 (Ice-Cream Sandwich) and above. Data charges may apply, as determined by local operators and service providers.
