Obami, South Africa’s biggest social learning platform, now offers online tutoring services for primary and secondary school learners.

Launched in beta this week, Obami Tutor connects learners – who are looking to improve their understanding and performance within a particular subject – to real life tutors via their mobile phones.

The service is much needed in South Africa, where the country’s public education system ranks amongst the worst in the world. Traditional private tutoring – where learners meet tutors face-to-face at an agreed venue – comes at a
significant cost to parents and can often be a logistical nightmare in terms of carting kids around. And, for those living in remote areas, traditional tutoring is simply not an option.

Obami Tutor intends to change this, by bringing quality and affordable tuition to any learner from anywhere.

A group of handpicked, virtually sourced, teachers underwent a gruelling recruitment and training process to ensure the utmost in tutoring quality. The teachers – aptly named Obami Tutors – are fully equipped to guide learners
through interactive worksheets aligned to the South African CAPS curriculum, while providing insightful feedback at every step along the way.

This is yet another notch in the bedpost of ed-tech innovation – last year, Obami was the first organisation to digitise three years’ worth of past papers for South Africa’ s Annual National Assessments and National Senior Certificate,
allowing learners to revise digitally through a medium that they find engaging (an initiative that is already underway to support the 2014 learners).

Obami has been recognised as one of the most innovative technologies in the world by the likes of UNESCO, Forbes, CNN and countless other international organisations.

The platform is being used by over 400 registered organisations across Africa; enabling teachers, learners and parents to connect to one another, create and access great educational content, share experiences and build a love for
learning.

Obami Tutor is currently free for Maths and English across Grade 7, 8 and 9 during the Beta launch phase which runs until the end of term one.
