Saturday (1 February 2014) saw the beginning of a mass roll-out of Smart ID cards by the Department of Home Affairs.

The new cards have been made available to 16 year-old youths and pensioners who are 60 years and above in the 28 earmarked departmental offices across the country.

To this end, Home Affairs has called upon people turning 16 and other first-time applicants to apply now at the 28 Home Affairs offices equipped to issue the Smart ID cards.

Currently, pensioners born during January and February are urged to apply now, with other pensioners able to apply after March depending on their date of birth.

The roll-out of the smart ID cards to all eligible South Africans will take a few years and the department has asked citizens to wait until called upon to apply.
