Sony Pictures is using typical hacker tactics in an attempt to prevent compromised information from being downloaded.
The information was lost in hacker attack on the Sony systems a couple of weeks ago and has now been made available for download. The data includes financial information about the company, individual’s banking details, and correspondence that has made headlines over the last couple of days.
Now, Sony is attempting to prevent downloads of the information from sites where it’s being stored, by launching distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks against them.
The information was allegedly stolen by a hacking group called Guardians of Peace, which claims to have retrieved 100Tb of data, which it is slowly leaking to the public.
Among the information that has been leaked so far is detailed financial figures on all of Sony’s recent movies, including how well they performed plus projection for movies not yet released.
Invoices and bank account details have also been compromised, as well as information on Sony promotional activities.
What’s been making headlines, however, is the personal data of celebrities that has been released. This includes aliases that were used by movie stars, as well as personal phone numbers and e-mail addresses.
Correspondence was under the spotlight this morning, with a folder of e-mails purporting to belong to Sony Picture co-chairman Amy Pascal.
Other leaked information includes movie release pictures and scripts for movies set for release next year.
